In the 1840s, the community was named "Bagdad" after the Tennessee hometown of one of the settlers. In 1882, the town was officially established as "Leander". It was named in honor of a railroad official, Leander "Catfish" Brown. In 1983, the skeletal remains of "Leanderthal Lady", a prehistoric woman, were discovered near the city.
