Georgetown was founded in 1848 and named after George Washington Glasscock who donated land for the town. Early settlers were attracted to the area because of the abundance of goods, clear water, and timber; similar to the Tonkawa Indians who had flourished in the area for many years. Georgetown continued to be an agriculture based community for a major part of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century.
